My Only Brother
Polly leaned on her mop watching Shufti— Betty — show Paul how to hold Jack properly. Paul handled Jack the way he handled fallen baby birds: with gentleness and wonder. He glowed. Polly couldn't help smiling at his happiness. Jack squirmed and gurgled, grabbing one of Paul's fingers. Paul's mouth dropped, astonished. He looked up, smiling, not at Polly, but at Betty, who smiled back, eyes shining like the sun. Polly went back to mopping the floor, feeling a strange mix of happiness and sadness. Paul had someone else to take care of him, now. He didn't need her anymore. |
