Convince Me

Mal is sitting in the window of a sidewalk café, sipping coffee.
It’s a challenge. The human heartbeats all around her are very distracting, but it’s something she'll have to get used to, if she’s going to maintain her temperance pledge.
Across the table from her sits another ribboner – the ribboner, one could say – toying with a cup of tea.
Margolotta is wearing a dove grey gown and a pale pink walking jacket that would be very human except that it has bats embroidered along the lapels.
Mal is carefully not saying anything about the bats. Or the pink. She’s noticed that a lot of people in the League have taken to dressing “just like humans”, and she can’t, for the life of her, figure out why. Margolotta is the best at it, so far, and even she can’t get the details quite right.
Maladicta, who has no intention of renouncing traditional black velvet, despite her change in diet, examines her nails and sighs. It had taken Margolotta several hours of very thorough… convincing to get Mal to agree but, in a moment of post-coital weakness, she had allowed Margolotta to paint her nails shell pink.
Mal takes another sip of her coffee.
“You know, my dear,” Margolotta offers, smiling encouragingly. “You’d look lovely in forget-me-not blue.”
Mal manages, by some miracle, not to spill her coffee at the thought.
“My dear,” she counters, cocking an eyebrow. “It will take a lot more convincing to get me to do that.”
