The door closes, the sliver of light disappearing from under the door as the Daughter's shoes click down the hall.

In the darkness, we can breathe again.

Tilda shifts beside me, brushing her fingers through my hair. I ease myself onto my back, wincing at the protests of my torn skin, the lashes that are still healing.

She hovers over me, careful, so careful, not to put any of her weight on my body when she kisses me.
