The world lies on a disc on the back of four giant elephants who ride the great cosmic turtle A'Tuin. Terry Pratchett has been writing about Discworld and its inhabitants for decades, and has produced a wealth of detail and a cast of characters that grows every year.
Borogravia has been at war with its neighbouring countries as long as anyone can remember. It's never Borogravia that's warlike and greedy, of course, it's just everyone else. The war has worn the country down to the bone. The people survive on what they can, although, a lot of the time, they don't. There are fewer and fewer young men, now. Polly's brother has gone to war, and the news from the front are that his regiment is all dead or captured. So Polly cuts off her ringlets and puts on a pair of trousers and she's off to fight for Borogravia, or at least to bring her brother back home. Together with the other recruits, who include a vampire, an Igor, a troll and a bunch of frightened little lads, she ends up making decisions that will turn the tide of the war. |
